The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
