No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
