As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
