Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
